To celebrate the opening of the Big Pit branch, the Pontypool and Blaenavon held a 3 day gala to celebrate industrial steam in South Wales. 3 visiting locos attended, Mardy Monster, Sir Gomer and Whitehead. All three had previously worked in South Wales before preservation. On the day I visited on the Saturday, the weather was mostly sunny with a few showers with very strong winds.

In this video

Sir Gomer and Mardy Monster climb from Blaenavon High Level to Furnace Sidings
Whitehead arriving at Big Pit Halt (under construction)
Sir Gomer and 71515 leaving Blaenavon High Level
Sir Gomer climbing the bank between Furnace and Whistle with a coal train
Mardy Monster and Whitehead climbing the bank
71515 and Whitehead at Bridge 12 (ROR)
71515 climbing the bank under dark cloud (a heavy shower started as soon as I turned the camera off)
Mardy and 19 arriving at Furnace Sidings
71515 arriving into Furnace Sidings from Big Pit
Whitehead in the yard
and all three visitors climbing above Blaenavon.

I would like to apologise for the inactivity recently, I will have less time on here now I'm doing A Levels.

  • A superb piece of work Jamie, you've put in a great deal of effort to get those shots from the higher view points, and this has produced stunning views of the area....10/10/....Bob

  • @robmasterman Thank you Bob! I had been considering doing shots from up the side of the valley for a while, but for some reason until Saturday I never tried doing them. Thanks for the comment!

  • Some fantastic long shots here! So nice to see the train in the landscape, rather than the usual lineside stuff. Great work.

  • @TheBukakeMaster Thank you! I do admit I like to include steam in the landscape shots where I can as sometimes I find just doing lineside shots gets a bit repetitive. Thanks for the comment!

  • I work at the PBR I'm a loco cleaner and a TTI. It was a nice weekend. Nice vid

  • @Beatboxer1346 Thank you! I will have to try and volunteer at Blaenavon when I haven't got as much work to do. Thanks for the comment!

  • love it just moved here lovely place so peaceful

  • @JBTEvans Tar mate, I was amazed at how well the external microphone handled the wind, the best £60 I've spent yet! Also I did consider not filming that shot of 71515 as I've filmed it there several times before, glad I did now! Thanks for the comment!

  • @steampics Sir Gomer is an excellent loco, I was surprised at how well it performed. Also it was nice to see it as my grandfather helped out with the restoration of it at Butetown in the early 1990s. Thanks for the comment!

  • @U2ATOMIC Thank you, it was defiantly a great weekend, and in my opinion it was the best gala that the railway has held yet. Thanks for the comment!
