Coming to PBS in September.
THE WAR, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns.
Almost all of the thousands of hours of film collected for THE WAR arrived with no sound. Directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick explain the journey from silence to surround sound.

Premieres Sunday, September 23rd at 8pm ET/PT
It is an incredible sound scape they created--but I figured it had to have been added on afterwards. I couldn't imagine that they had the technology that was a) portable, b) recorded audio as well as video and c) could handle the weathering they went through. I'm watching this series now and it's definitely fascinating--so glad to have the mystery solved on who it was that added the sound. Thanks PBS!

It's amazing the craft, dedication and passion that went into this production.I haven't seen the documentary yet but plan on in the near future.I didn't even realize that Ken Burns and sound design staff had to add sound to the archived footage.Whoa I'm blown away and inspired!Even thinking about pursuing a career in sound design.
