As with many useful things, I learned The Girl I Left Behind Me from Bugs Bunny, although I may have heard it first at one of the musters I got taken to in nursery school. It was shot on the Fort River about a quarter of the way from Groff Park to Poor Farm Swamp. The fife and drum phenomenon is pretty interesting- the most local incarnation of related practices that stretch at least all the way from Indonesia to Britain and across the Atlantic (although in most places it involves shawms of some sort rather than transverse flutes). The fife and drum groups in New England apparently never went away, just changed function and sponsorship (gotta read that dissertation).
I was listening to a CD of a group from Coventry CT, Lorenzo Dow's hometown, while driving in Shutesbury in the snow when the turkeys gave me the idea for the video.

Streams, rivers, brooks, creeks etc. all have their associated romance, but run off gets short shrift. I made a long video of run off sounds and sun and shadow play on the Metacomet trail that I could watch for hours, but I figured not a lot of other people would be as excited about it. I did stick a little bit on the front of this one though, which features the sound of a C5A out of Westover AFB, a really prominent and often beautiful part of the valley soundscape. The last shot is looking down the power lines toward the January Hills in Cushman/Leverett, which soar to a dizzying 800 feet above sea level. I love the combination of the sound of big wet snow flakes and the crackle of the lines.

  • Cool! I liked the fife and the turkeys, but the powerlines were the best; that erie buzz when it rains or snows just makes you stop and listen for a piece.

  • @ClintL63 I'm glad you like the power lines. I wished I'd filmed more that day- it was so cool. Last time we were out there we could feel the electricity running through us. Probably bad for you, but also pretty cool.

  • Tim great video. I liked the turkey part of it. If you ever make it out here to Chicago we have to get together and talk about our old high school days. Bob

  • sounds good my brother. You've been doing the real deal all this time- I'm just trying to get the turkeys to do their part...

  • What is that first song called?

  • I can tell you are a very auditory person. You captured sounds only a few of us take the time to enjoy. Thanks! The turkey's were a hoot. Would like to hear more of your playing. Good job here.

  • The snow sounds really cool. And I love the conjugation of marching turkeys with the fife and drum music. It's perfect. It makes me laugh every time I see it.

  • Looking good for Thanksgiving. Props to PETA, but damn, they look tasty.

  • that's my goal in life...

  • yeah man. Get them lazy birds to work...

  • I love it you were calling the Turkeys to "Quarters" :)
