Maiya Singh Ji, My Ustad (teacher), playing a Bandish in Raag Yaman/Kaliyaan.

Recording was made mainly for practice purposes.

The instrument is a Tar Shehnai, which is an Esraj + a horn that produces the sweet, high pitched sound.

An Esraj (similar to Dilruba) is a hybrid Sarangi + Sitar.

If you noticed: I fumbled the taal at one point because I started concentrating on what my teacher was playing, but he adjusted what he was playing to fit my mistake in.

Couple of other mistakes with sur towards the end also.

Advanced listeners will notice instantly :P

check http://harsangeet.com/2008/05/esraj-album-1-2008/ to download more MP3s of Ustad-ji on Esraj.

  • i thought it was a bong

  • that guy looks like he hasnt slept in days.

  • @NinjaPiratePenguin Also see tmmv001's comment. Though similar to yours, I point out "programming" & "mind frame" which is accurate. Though most people seem ok with & go along living so, we are not robots & should not wholly succumb to non-beneficial programming. Our brain's neuron connections change like programming but we CHOOSE to remain programmed or not. I chose not to. Learning about tuning variances (which happened in West history as well) helped me quickly acclimate to Indian classical.

  • @NinjaPiratePenguin "Preference" is usually liking without logic; whatever strikes your physiology instead of your mind; random as any animal's preference. Western &/or classically trained (as I am) is irrelevant. Relevant is UNDERSTANDING concepts of rhythm, melody, aesthetics, & their evolution. Then, you see the beauty.

While composition, harmony, & layering of instruments is more complex in west, it is a fact the underlying structure, rhythm, & melodic development is more complex in India.

  • u donkey. dont hv a sense to understand anygreat thing ...... so just dare not to comment on Indian Music... It does require an intelligent and sane mind to understand and a spiritual heart to understand .................

  • I think of the daily living of elephants and indian people

  • @GrewalMichael Oh and you do? It really depends on musical preference. To the western trained ear, this is quite horrible to listen to.
