These rare birds are thriving on introduced predator free Mou Waho Island, 16 km up Lake Wanaka, New Zealand. They are very strong with their beaks, as they are flightless, and forage on the ground for food.
Extinct on mainland NZ since 1920, they are thriving on this island and Eco Wanaka are assisting by planting Native Food trees on every trip there. These trees are already feeding the birds.
