@Amar7605 At 0:36 you can see the colonel stop a soldier from firing, then at 1:00 he has them firing on the Firefox. Probably he figured if they could close the doors, he wouldn't have to risk damaging what was a very expensive prototype. The Soviet Premier later in the film admits to Gant that they really don't care whether he lives or dies, but the plane is too valuable to simply shoot down without trying to talk him into surrendering it first.

@davektm5257: The actor is Kenneth Colley, and he's had a pretty good career, look him up on IMDB. He was in both of those SW movies.as "Admiral Piett".
