  • Hard to believe anyone could be shot that many times and still be standing. I have a few .58 caliber slugs and a .69 caliber minie ball, and they are scary. Those rifles may be slow to load, but they're serious business once you pull the trigger.

  • that John B Gordon wa one tough s.o.b. one bullet would have landed any normal union soldier in the veteran core of injuried soldiers but danm he was tough as nails.

  • "These men are going to stay here General til the sun goes down or victory is won."

    Gen. John B. Gordon

my favorite quote of the war.

  • I'm related to him on my fathers side of the family. Btw he was a Brigadier general not a Colonel

  • this is good! :)

  • R.E. Lee did not actually surrender the ANV to Grant. They agreed upon / signed the terms of surrender.

J.B Gordon surrendered the ANV to J.L. Chamberlain (the multiple wounded hero of Little Round Top).

If you have never read of the surrender -- may I suggest you so, it's quite moving!

As Chamberlain's men saluted the surrendering Confederates. Gordon reared his horse and returned the salute with his sword!

  • During the course of the war Gordon was wounded twice more, during Earlys Valley Campaign of 1864 and the attack of Fort Stedman during the attempted Confederate breakout from Petersburg. His wife, Fanny, was the quintessential southern belle scrapper. She often accompanied Gordon on campaigns. During the Third Battle of Winchester Gordon found her in the middle of the street shouting encouragement to retreating Confederate soldiers with shot and shell whizzing about her.

  • Very nicely done. General Gordon was defintely one of the best and more reliable generals on either side. Very fitting that he surrendered his troops to another other very honorable general, Joshua Chamberlain. Both showed extreme honor when the surrender took place, Chamberlain ordering his troops to give a salute as Gordon's troops marched by, and Gordon responding in kind.

  • its exaclty what the historian shelby foote, god rest his soul, stated that its not like the modern steel jacket bullets that clip the bone, these .58 and .69 caliber balls when they hit they destroyed the bone and when the surgones got to it there wasnt any rea bone left so they ha to amputate.

  • ...and we're supposed to give up the flag that these brave boys fought and died under? To hell with that sorry idea.

  • More Americans died in this war over our freedoms then any other. Much of my family
