On April 5, 1933 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued executive order 6102 which required all persons to surrender whatever gold coin, bars or certificates in their possession (over $100 value) to the closest Federal Reserve Bank by May 1, 1933. Failure to do so could result in a $10,000 fine and/or 10 years imprisonment. This law was not repealed until Dec 31, 1974. So if you had gold you didn't surrender, you couldn't sell it without risk of prison or confiscation for over 40 years.
