http://my411family.com/ Sony's Douglas Smith explains Sony's OLED technology used for TV screens. Thin OLED TV screens from Sony are more energy efficient and better for the environment. Learn about Sony OLED TV here.
OLED = organic light-emitting diode. This is an amazing new technology that will enable extremely thin TV's with a contrast ratio that is about 100 times greater than the best consumer LCD's or Plasma's on the market today, thanks to the fact that they have no backlight. An advantageous side note of this means they are extremely power efficient. With tested response times of up to 0.01ms, which far exceed today's best. They are much brighter, with more vivid colors than existing TV's too. A few issues remain to get this technology to the mainstream, the big issue being the organic material used has a relatively short lifespan.

they would definitely not snap lol, it's hard plastic :P
even if it did, the screen itself is that really hard impossible-to-rip plastic, or any plastic that you want since you just have to print it on lol

I personally don't like how thin they are. They look like they're going to snap in half when moving them from place to place. Current 'flat panels' are thin enough, thought the lightweight is useful.

Well done sharp for being the only company on this reel to recognise openly the flaws of oled technology and not releasing a commercial unit because of them!!

What's the largest display with this that is available to consumers?

Yeah, true enough. I can see this new OLED tech going the way Philips has with their new 21:9 cinematic LCD screen and those being the norm in 10- 15 years.
I hope so anyway. What a TV that would be! (prices should come down a lot over time, too).

it would be over engineering and would raise up the manufacturing cost of an undoubtedly very very expensive product....
