I think some young people don't appreciate the greatness of the bands from the 60's because they have heard later generations of musicians that learned from them and built on them.
The Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, the Dead, Cream, Airplane Hendrix etc - they INVENTED their own music. Beatles didn't have anyone to teach them how make a song like Rain, the Stones didn't have anyone to teach them how to make a song like Satisfaction - they created their own music where there was none.
GZVidz - sure, they had roots-everybody has roots. But they left their roots far behind and went into uncharted territory. I don't think that has happened much since then. Not to say that great talent has not arisen. I'm a big fan of the alternative - 'Seattle' bands - Nirvana, Stone Temple - to my experienced aging ears, that is the most original music to surface since the 60's - blows me away - a NEW sound, Although Korbain himself admitted to being strongly influenced by the Beatles.
@vectortemple Don't underestimate the role of Keith Richard's, the greatest rock star who ever lived, in being the driving force that balanced the egos and kept the Stones together. His style compliments the others and plays off the other instruments perfectly. Listen to Rain, this is the Beatles hitting on all cylinders and working together flawlessly as a team!
@GZVidz - no argument from me about Keith - you're "preaching to the choir" - the most underestimated leader/musician/rock star in history. When the conversation turns to great guitarists, I always mention Keith among the top 5 and everyone stares in disbelief!. But as a musician and a hard core Stones devotee for 45 years, I know the 'ugly truth' that no one wants to admit!
About Rain/PBW, agreed - the Beatles at their PEAK as a BAND - one could say it was downhill from there....
@pepijnlol - I had the 45RPM single 43 years ago but I don't think I've heard it since - this was their PEAK as a band. Whoever doesn't believe that they were a GREAT BAND should listen to Rain/Paperback Writer - a single that, to my great dismay, never made it to any of their LP's. But I see that they are now available on 'The Beatles - Past Masters Volume 2'. Too bad it costs $22 which I don't want to pay for only those 2 cuts - the rest I have or they don't interest me...
