Women in Black, Union Square maintains a vigil just about every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30. The movement begain in Israel in 1988 when Israeli women - Jewish, Christian and Muslim, stood at an intersection with signs in English, Hebrew and Arabic reading "End the Occupation". We began in NYC around the time of 9-11. With our banner, signs and flyers, we let people know that there is another way to understand what is going on in Israel and Palestine that the one they are hearing about in the corporate media, a vision based on human rights and international law. To mark the Six Day War, yet another year of the occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights, we have an expanded event each year. This year, we set up a wall made by the Students for Justice in Palestinian, symbolizing Israel's Separation Barrier, inside the West Bank along with Checkpoint Guerilla Theater, simulating what it's like for Palestinians trying to go about their lives but are stopped at a checkpoint along the way.

  • I know this is street theater but that guy with the beard and yarmulke and the "Jews have a higher soul" spiel is either a really good actor or he's frighteningly not.

  • You go gals and guys. God gave Union Square to WiB.
