James Nicholson was a radioman and tailgunner for a TBF torpedo bomber, with Airgroup Seventeen, flying off the USS Hornet on April 7, 1945. His unit was one of the first to hit the Japanese battleship the Yamato, which was sunk on that mission.
A complete account of Jim's experiences in the Navy during WWII can be found at http://www.jimnicholson.blogspot.com/

Thank you for sharing this. I am a volunteer at the USS Hornet museum and we have a replica of the World war 2 scoreboard and the sinking of the Yamato is on that board. We also have a restored TBM Avenger which is the same aircraft as
Mr. Nicholson was in built by a different builder. Please check out my videos and also youtube search "living ship" David Cobb USS Hornet museum volunteer

my great uncle was also a gunner or a pilot, can't remember which on a TBF Torpedo Bomber and he was on the USS Hornet too. He died in a practice run though.
