Thirteen percent of teenagers suffer from depression brought on by stress. Stress can lead many students to dropping out of school or even to committing suicide. Many children from urban areas who face stress in their everyday lives turn to negative coping mechanisms. The Hawn Foundation has introduced the MindUp program which teaches children effective ways to de-stress and cope with all aspects of their lives. Through meditation and sensory interaction, children are able to calm down and focus on their school work and other daily tasks. Happiness leads children to become more mindful of their knowledge and learning abilities. Since its conception in 2005, The Hawn Foundation has helped implement the MindUp program in classrooms throughout the United States and Canada.
