Analog to digital. Flatbed editing to Avid/1. SD to HD—and now to 3D. Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Studio and back to Final Cut Pro X. Where are we? Where have we come from? Where are we going?

Throughout the history of film and video editing, there have been many watershed moments that have turned the industry on its head. Each has been met with uncertainty, but ultimately led way to the industry's next paradigm shift.

In this special Tekserve event, presented by Evan Schechtman of @radical.media and Outpost Digital, and co-sponsored by Manhattan Edit Workshop, we took a look at the history of digital video editing—with a particular focus on Apple's Final Cut Pro X, and how this just-released software sets the foundation for the industry's next big revolution.

FCP X is great, I've been a NLE for about 14 years and I can honestly say that FCP X is the best I've ever used. Yes its had some teething problems but not when it comes to the creative side of it. I can edit from straight cuts to overlays/fx/transitions to final color grade faster than any system combo out there. I love it. I'm glad I ignored the initial reviews and stuck to my guns. Thank you Apple.

Only a minute in, and the audio is pissing me right off. If there is something I can't listen to, it's f***ed panning.

I have to say, this is dismissing a LOT of caveats I have (or rather had) about going to FCP X. I started editing on 6 a few years ago, currently working on 7. This spring I will have a ton of HD footage coming in and will be a nice thing not to have to transcode everything before dropping it into FCP 7, only to need a rendering afterwards. Thanks for posting this.

Couldn't disagree more. Finished up a shoot with 8 DSLRs running continuously over the weekend. Brought them into Final Cut Pro X, it found and synced all the clips for me, I ran the multi-cam feature through and cut 18 hours of total footage down to 9 5 minute clips in a day. Why would auto syncing of clips be something you'd prefer to do manually?

Is this view based off the version of X shown in this video? Because it's way underpowered vs the 7 versions released since.

all very interesting but "the king has no clothes"! This beefed up imovie marketed as final cut pro, simply takes everyone back to their first crappy £20 suite from 20 years ago, and ALL the advanced tech you preach just ultimately takes away hands on creativity. this new apple suite is rather like going from a manual car to an automatic...i STILL prefer cortinas and old stick shifts & their style, & their extra control when cornering etc...if you LOVE editing , you'll HATE final cut pro x

What's wrong with the sound of this movie? Was the mike hidden in a sleeping bag?
