The Queen has three official residences - the best known, Buckingham Palace; the oldest, Windsor Castle; and the most romantic, Palace of Holyroodhouse. Among the few working royal palaces in the world today, they serve as both family homes and as the setting for the business of Monarchy. Each has its own distinctive story - long histories that reflect good and bad times, triumph and tragedy and, of course, the lives of some of our most memorable kings and queens. But they all share certain features - incredible collections of treasures that reflect both the tastes of their occupants and the artistic development of the nation, and architecture that has evolved across the centuries to meet the needs of different ages, reflecting the story of Britain and its people like no other buildings.

Buckingham Palace may be just about the most famous building in the world, but its story is much less familiar. Fiona Bruce reveals how England's most spectacular palace emerged from a swampy backwater in just 300 years. The journey of discovery takes her from the sewers of London to the magnificent State Rooms; from a home for camels and elephants to the artistic brilliance of C18th-century Venice; and from a prince's Chinese fantasy to the secret of how the Palace's glittering chandeliers are cleaned today.

  • thank you so much with this video i was able to make this beatuiful home on the sims. i love the british monarchy and all of england im from the usa. i plan on moving to london soon ive even developed a british accent for i can fit in. quick questions where the royals there when youll filmed. and ive wondered how do the butlers and staff get hired or do they have to do diffrent stuff i ask only if you know the answer's. i hope you do answer my comment's.

  • @thedarklordvoldemot2 I didn't film this programme but I expect it was filmed while the family were elsewhere as it would have been a huge inconvenience for those at the palace. Jobs available in the household are listed on the website royal . gov . uk look for the quick links box on the right and the section 'latest job vacancies'.

  • Then why have them at all, I read that UK taxpayers are paying 30+ million a year for them to do....what?

  • @cooper210 ...to be our Head of State. How much does your president cost ?

  • What happens if the King/Queen is a tyrant? Can you get rid of that person or have to deal with it?

  • @cooper210 The monarch has little power over the people nowadays, the government is responsible for changing laws etc.

  • i remember reading how inappropriate fiona bruce was for this programme. it should have been called fiona bruce vs Buckingham Palace. i couldn't stop laughing when she turns up in venice reclining on a gondola lol.

  • Jag varit där 2005-07-05 tills 24 och på morgonen gick ut från London 25 juli anländ till Malmö Sturup flygplan.Så ofta gick till fotograferade jag.

  • @cooper210 In the old days, if a monarch was hated by his people or a powerful group, they or the nobility could conspire to overthrow him and replace him with the person next in line to the throne. Or, if they were absolutely fed up with the royal family and wanted them gone, they could start a revolution, or even execute their royalty if they chose to.Ancient Kings and Queens depended largely on the support of their people, so it would not be too hard to displace them if they were not careful.
