King Eider is a rare vagrant in north-western Ireland. Two immature birds were found in Drumcliff bay, Co. Sligo, Ireland on the 3rd January 2009 by Paul Keogh. This bird, and the accompanying first-winter drake have been feeding well despite the close attentions of a Great Black-backed Gull

  • No experience of interactions with skuas, but I haven't seen any bird win against these guys!

  • the gull did not attack the duck?

  • Yes, each time the duck came up from a dive with prey, the gull attacked until the duck dropped the food, which it robbed. They got better at avoiding the gull, sometimes swallowing their food as they surfaced, but the gull succeeded often enough to make it worthwhile.
