As part of a national PTA program called "Reflections", whose purpose is to encourage and motivate children in various creative and artistic subjects, Emma (age 5 1/2) choreographed and performed her own dance. The theme this year was "WOW", and each student who entered needed to interpret that his/her own way. This dance is called "WOW is Everywhere". It's performed by Emma Louise at Baird Point in Buffalo, NY, with the original music ("LaDaDiDo") and videography by her Dad (me, Rob). Make sure to watch the second video too where she explains how her dance was connected to the theme.. very funny :-)

Choreographer/Dancer: Emma Louise, Age 5 3/4
Music: Emma's Dad (Rob)
Shoot Location: Baird Point, UB North Campus
Status: Emma has won local, regional and state levels and is on to the Nationals.... neat!

  • this is great! am loving this kid!

  • PS If you have any questions doubting me -- feel free to ask.. she told us much more about her ideas than she told the video (e.g. her looking around in all directions at the beginning then running off)

  • You may not be used to seeing such an inspiring young child.. but it's the real deal my friend, and IMO *completely* what the program is about.

Having fun creating something original, without the parents helping with the creation process.

I videotape professionally -- and trust me when I say: children are capable of a *tremendous* amount, when we don't hold them back (and "treat them like kids"). I've seen incredible talent in our youth, even grade school, without pressure from parents

  • - Location: she wanted to be on a stage instead of our living room, and a friend suggested Baird Point which we pass frequently as we drive past the college campus.. admitedly, I helped choose the location

    - cued direction: there was *none*

    - artist's statement was completely her own -- did you listen to her talking about her dance at the end, or on the linked video? None of her commentary was rehearsed.. I simply asked the question there and recorded her answers.

  • You couldn't be more wrong ebiatda.... I'm her Dad, so I know first-hand:

    - she choreographed it 100% herself, and changed it up a bit once she realized how hard the concrete was (she bypassed any on-the-floor moves ;-)

    - music selection: I wrote and played it; it was a piece I doodled with in our living room that she had fun free-dancing to

    - costume: that dress was one she wore two years earlier at a "father-daughter" dance and she chose to wear it for her Reflections submission

  • As cute as it is, clearly choreography, music selection, costume design, set design, site location, cued direction, artist's "original" statement are of the parents. As a performance - cute, fun to watch etc. As what "Reflections" is about, this is a travesty. State? Nationals? - wow. I feel sorry for the child.

  • Sooo cute. I have a vision her doing a repeat performance at about 18...and you flashback between the two performance. She is beautiful!

  • Congrats she is on her way! and thanks for your lovely comments about my girly girl!...i will let her tell you later when she gets back from school what her thoughts during the number were...all i did was take video....

i'm glad they aren't up against each other (age)

    sincerely!

    shari
