The play begins in 1977, with a meeting between adulterous lovers, Emma and Jerry, two years after their affair ended. During the nine scenes of the play, we move back in time, through the stages of their affir with the play ending in the house of Emma and Robert, her husband, who is Jerry's best friend.

"Betrayal is an exquisite play, brilliantly simple in form and courageous in its search for poetry that turns banality into a melancholy beauty. Behind its smooth pastel surface is a haunting vision of a man as a creature trapped in an orbit of betrayal that sends him circling around the ideal without ever reaching it." -Jack Kroll newsweek
