hey, i live in kansas and it doesnt get cold long enough for the ice to be safe enough to ice fish, so i was wondering if you could give me some tips on cold water fishing from the shore, i usually fish near a dam by the spillway. I catch a lot of white bass in the summer and early to mid fall using jigs and live shad, but now (mid winter) its gets around 20 degrees F air temp. and i cant catch any fish using a jig, i just let it sit on the bottom and tap it up every 30 secs or so.

Yep. Why do you ask?

An approach that works well for me from January through late February below dams is a 1/16 to 1/8 oz marabou jig tipped with a small gulp minnow. You may even have to size down to a 1/32 oz jig and tip with some other bait like a meal worm or gulp maggots. Try different retrieves to trigger fish. Go with a lift drop and pause or drag it slowly along the bottom. Let the fish tell you what they want. My rule of thumb is to start aggressive and if no success then try finesse. Patrick Edwards PK
