  • Thanks again dadmarch1927. You are right to say that epsom salts, olive oil and lemon juice etc can be sometimes used to cleanse the gall bladder of stones, and anyone who wants to take this option is welcome. It may be $30,000 for surgery in the US, but here in the UK we have an National Health Service and money is not a motive for suggesting surgery (besides which, even in the UK private healthcare system, the cost is rarely as much as $10000). Thanks again for your comments. Best wishes.

  • Thanks dadmarch1927. Happy to take criticism. The gall bladder may allow the bile to thicken, but help with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and the neutralisation of stomach acid are functions of bile itself - not the gall bladder. Whatever the gall bladder does, it does seem to be a non-vital organ insofar as its removal causes little if any disruption to the body's digestive capabilities.

  • Thankyou for your nice comments. I really tried hard to make it informative in a simple and easy-to-listen-to way. The topics I cover are those that patients have repeatedly asked over the 18 years I have been doing this sort of surgery. All of my gallstone patients now get shown this video when they come to see me (and get to take a copy away with them too) and they have universally found it really helpful. I am pleased to make it available to all, so they can hopefully benefit too.

  • If you want to know about Gallstones, this is the one to watch.

  • Really good. This is the best guide I have seen or heard on the subject. I wish there were more patient-centered videos like this!

  • And further, you can clean the gall bladder with epson salts, apple juice, olive oil, and over time do a fine job of it. There are many videos on youtube to assist you. Don't let them take it out. You NEED it! In the US, its $30,000 in the hospitals' pocket.

  • The "doc" says he does not know the use of the gall bladder. It allows fatty vitamins to be absorbed, the bile to thicken and emulsify food for digestion, and allows gall to neutralize the stomach acid when food hits the small intestines. Otherwise, you go from constipation to the runs, and burning in the small intestine occurs. Without it you cannot get the correct amount of bile to digest your food. How can he not know that?

  • The best vedio n information I ever seen on you tube abt gallstones , I recently found dat I have gallstone n they cousin me lot pain n I was really worried but after watching this vedio made me feel bit ok

    Thank u doc.. Nice1

  • Thanks so much! Very imformative indeed!

  • Many congratulations Mr. Markham - for making this video so helpful and informative to patients, with practical information that is easily understandable. It is certainly a useful resource for us in counselling patients regarding the operation, and thank you for making it so readily available. I believe this is a successful model for patient information in the future.

We just had a patient who would definitely benefit from watching this!!

  • Thank you very much for the very informative videos. My mother has gallstones and I'm very worried because she's very firm in her decision not to be operated upon. She has gallstone symptoms but not all the time. Everytime she eats fatty foods, I'm so worried that she'll have this gallstone pain again. Thanks for the info.

  • As President of the Association of Surgeons of GB and Ireland (ASGBI) I commend these videos to all patients about to undergo cholecystectomy (removal of the gall baldder). They are clear, precise, accurate and helpful. Mr N Markham is well recognised for his innovative work in day case surgery and is to be congratulated, with his team, for producing such helpful patient information.

I am sure many surgeons in the UK will adopt these links for the benefit of their patients.
