@bto73 18 years old, and I've loved this song (and Arlo) since I was a kid, thanks to my dad!

Timeless tune. Man this takes me back!!! The younger generation should get to know songs like this.

americana at its best

@TheCheezhead15 Steve Goodman was a *fantastic* songwriter. Check out The Dutchman, Spoon River, Banana Republic, Old Fashioned....in addition to this great song.

@TheSantafe26 Arlo is terrific, but Steve Goodman (the author) recorded a wonderful version also, which you can find here on youtube.

This song - The City Of New Orleans - By Arlo Guthrie peaked at # 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1972

I'll bet Arlo's Dad Woody would have loved covering this Steve Goodman song as well. Too bad he never had the chance. But for me, Goodman's song is great -- Arlo's version the definitive one to my ears. I am sure Goodman's is equally good. It's just that kind of song. There are many singers and songwriters who never write a song this beautiful. It's almost an American traditional song by now. Like "This Land Is Your Land."
This version has a better groove than the Willie version. Anyway, I dig Arlo's version.
