"Wie gehts, mein gereibel!" I love the way he immediately apologises after saying this, but having the odd laugh at foreigners is fairly harmless most of the time I think.

One mans clear vision of what he wanted, despite the hassles he made a cinematic legend. Thanks Bruce.

Here is a great writor and director, a genuine artist with natural passion and humour.

And of course it would take an American audience about 10 minutes to start laughing at the New York screening. When English dialects are used in a film, it takes about that long to decipher the rhythms of the speech. Why this is a mystery to the British I'll never understand.

Amazingly, the story Robinson tells at around 4:00 about the German students being recruited for the London screening of WAI is similar to a story that John Cleese tells about the second episode of Fawlty Towers. According Cleese, 60 of the 200 tickets for the studio audience of that episode - and the first four rows of the audience - were given to Icelandic tourists who knew no English, and during the shooting of the scene Cleese couldn't fathom why no one was laughing at the gags. Remarkable

@DavidMJordan Except I don't know what he could've done once Handmade was bought by Paragon (now HandMade Pic). I gather he didn't have much to do with the production company at that point, considering he only started it to fund Life of Brian at the last minute.

I cannot believe that George Harrison could have condoned that mean-minded bit of accountancy. he can't have known about it at the time but he could have made it up to robinson later.
-
What a fine man! Every bit as funny and intelligent as his masterpiece.

Yet again that oaf has destroyed my day...he will die, he will die :)
I feel so angry that Bruce himself is unable to enjoy Withnail as it has given so much pleasure and joy to others. What cheapskates Handmade were, and what an incredibly dedicated man Bruce was (and still is) for putting his own money into the film. Thank you Bruce, because without you doing that a hugely entertaining and important part of the film would have been lost forever.

The film industry is full of talentless malignent cunts, who are in equal measure, pathologically tight and fearful of anything they haven't seen 50 times already. I've been working in the industry for 8 years now and i wouldn't trust the studio heads to to make a bloody sandwhich let alone an origional film. Bunch of sheroot vendors!
