A lecture for those seeking the correct understanding of the utterly misunderstood concept of jihad. Zaid Shakir, addressing an audience at Northwestern University in Chicago, takes a comprehensive look at this truly noble and important concept in Islam. He first analyzes the word itself: its linguistic meaning, its derivatives, and its meaning as described in the Holy Qur'an. He then looks at the practical and normative application of jihad (or struggle) in the everyday life of the Muslim: the struggle of purifying the soul, the struggle of physically fighting in the way of Islam, the struggle with non-antagonist non-Muslims, and the struggle with the devil. Along the way, he explores many related topics such as terrorism, situations that justify the use of violence, various tools one can utilize in struggling against the self, love and compassion with non-Muslims, and the struggles within the family. And he concludes with a commentary on the role of Muslims in non-Muslim lands. An ideal talk for schools, libraries and Muslim student organizations. Other topics discussed: the destruction of the Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the Muslim response to pacifism, jihad in defense of non-Muslims, and the need to establish institutions that can help eliminate root causes of violence. • Islam and civilization cannot exist together.

  • @IslamOnDemand Oh please. The Muslims have been systematically destroying all evidence of every civilisation they have conquered. leaving only desolation and destitution. Woe to the Medina Christians and Jews who sheltered Mohammed when he fled from the 'persecution' of the Meccans. Little did those good people in their naivety realise he had already planned their own obliteration.

  • @GodOfUnbelief Islam has systematically DESTROYED and/or appropriated every civilisation it has conquered. By and large, Islam destroys what it cannot understand - which is basically anything remotely creative, innovative or requires any thought at all. Notice how Islamists claim EVERY Arab thinker of yesteryear as Islamic, yet it is obvious that even their work was ended by the ignorant mullahs 1,000 years ago.

  • @Zggrt443 Agreed.

  • As usual the Muslims blame everyone else for what Muslims themselves do - or at least, what they are asked to explain by those they have not already slaughtered or intimidated. Obviously the Muslims have NEVER apologized for their 1,400 year slaving because no-one has confronted them. But the ENORMOUS Buddhist statues; they expect everyone to THANK them for not having ALREADY destroyed them, like they did the ENTIRE Buddhist civilisation that was so wealthy it built them in the first place!!!

  • Priceless world cultural treasure lost because of a false desert religion. God is not real. Art>Religion.

  • yes taliban hates hazaras. and is there any proof of UN offer?

  • asshole, the Budha statue was blown up in a place called Bamyan which the majority of the population is Hazara. The Hazaras were descendents from the mongolian people from the Ghengis Khan days. You can spot a hazara from a mile away because they look mongolian mixed with Afgan. Although they are prodominately muslim there were thousands and thousands of innocent hazaras killed by taliban because they were from this descent. To include destroying the statue.

  • Just because you dont agree with something, doesnt mean you have to destroy it. Especially not if its a historic artifact that has been there for thousands of year, far longer than Islam by the way.

  • Well i say just that u dont have the right to destroy the bouddha statues. U like when i destroy a coran ??? u like ? Wel it is the same my friend !
