DON'T BE CRUEL
What we have here is an incredible jam session featuring Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins (plus an assortment of lesser known musicians). The date was December 4, 1956; the place was the legendary Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis Presley was already a superstar. They start singing some gospel songs, but the session picks up steam from there and continue through a great variety of musical songs and styles, The greatest part of this session, is Elvis' imitation of an imitation of his "Don't Be Cruel"
'I heard this guy in Las Vegas - Billy Ward and his Dominoes. There's a guy out there who's doin' a take-off of me; 'Don't Be Cruel'. He tried so hard, till he got much better, boy; much better than that record of mine'.
He was so impressed that he went back four straight nights just to hear it. That singer was Jackie Wilson, and Elvis' imitation of Jackie's imitation of his own song is really something special.
This is the best version of this song ever. Perkins and Killer backing up Big E is superb. Too bad Cash wasn't there during the session, he would have added a lot. Elvis Girl friend Barbara Hearn was also there and can be heard on the CD.
This video is made up of splicing three tracks that ended up on the "Million Dollar Quartet" album that was subsequently released. There are other posting of these tracks on 'Youtube' but here it is presented as a song. The instrumental version is by Bill Black Combo. The song was written and first recorded by Otis Blackwell, who sold the demo in December 1955 for $25.
Million Dollar Quartet available on Sony/BMG Records
