This video will show you how to easily install Ubuntu 9.04 (works for 9.10 too) (both versions - 32bit and 64bit) on USB flash drive, that you can take and boot from virtually anywhere.

Why would you want to try this?

First of all this is very good option for Windows users that want to try Ubuntu with its full potential - I mean with more potential than live CD - and safely. All the settings made to the system will be saved. Including appearance.

The other reason why to try this is for to have backup system in case something happened to your Windows for example. I dealt with a problem that Windows crashed totaly and its reinstallation was needed. The problem was that user wanted his data back. I used this USB system to boot and copied his data to connected external harddrive.

So, don't hesitate and try this and leave comments! Hope this will help you!

  • I am sure I have heard that piece of music before, think is was on a PORNO lol

  • So I guess you watch quite a lot adult entertainment motion pictures when you know the songs already ;)

And I should probably start to earn some money for that...

  • hey i have a question... im sort of a newbie.... does ubuntu in a way replace Windows XP?

  • Depending what you mean by "replace"...

Ubuntu has still long way to go and if you want to switch exclusively to Ubuntu, you have to make a list of your expectations (like what programs do you used on Windows and are there good replacements on Ubuntu?) and search the web to find out if Ubuntu can fulfill your needs.

There is really no simple answer to your question...

  • Hi,

I did everything you said on the video, and when i restarted my laptop (DELL btw) and got as far as the "Installer boot menu" then i chose "Run Ubuntu persistently"...but that was it, i couldn't go any further, in fact i'm getting a message saying:

"MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC

ata1: softreset failed (device not ready)

    modprobe: FATAL: could not load"

do you have any idea what the problem might be?

    thanks

  • @blu3civic Hmm, I'm sorry I haven't seen something like that. Try to Google it the error message. It came up with some suggestions. BTW did you installed it on USB flash drive or USB harddrive? If the first one, try to repeat installation proces. What Dell laptop do you have?

  • if i run ubuntu on usb WITHOUT INSTALL it,is all the change about the OS will disapear?such as installing some program like PHOTOSHOP,install the NVIDIA-DRIVER for my display card....?

  • use unbooting!!!

  • Your flash drive may turn to junk pretty quickly (6 months maybe). I would recommend buying a USB hard disk instead of a flash drive, because flash drives are not designed for this sort of load.

  • if is was to do this and download a piece of software or program or file, would it install on to the usb instead of the computers main hard drive and then be useable every time i boot Ubuntu from the usb ... and also what was the name of the music in the video?

  • @oliverjuhas For Ubuntu 10.04 you need atleast 3GB.

  • /watch?v=IH40L90Q90Q
