Looks like a lot more than 11 lengths to me.

If only he'd been on this form in the Derby.

His official past performance chart lists the winning margin at 12 1/4 lengths.

The quick Derby pace seemed to be his undoing, and I don't think he cared much for the going at Churchill either.

Easily the best horse in the TC races that year. Monarchos win in the derby was a pure insane pace setup. When the races were run with more normal early pace and better tactical rides from Stevens Monarchos was not within hailing distance of the son of Thunder Gulch.

I agree with you, but you do have to at least give Monarchos credit for winning the Derby at his own pace. That's horse racing. The favourite doesn't win nearly as much anymore.

Stevens, being the veteran he was, should have known to back off more in the Derby. It would have been great to see them battle it out to the wire, if only he had shown better judgement. Pure jockey error.

Point Given was indeed the best of that year, without a doubt.

great Horse. You need a little luck to win the triple crown. There are so many things that can go wrong. I think the Triple Crown is a bit overrated. Many great horses didnt win it. Including Skip Away, Man O'War, Spectacular Bid, Cigar and many more. Real Quiet almost won it and i dont think he was that great a horse.

Too bad the Derby had the pace of a downhill turf race at Santa Anita. Or Point Given may have put the Triple Crown drought to bed.

This horse is a poor Kentucky Derby showing away from being compared to Secratariat. That Kentucky Derby haunts me to this day. I wasn't born yet when Secratariat won his Triple Crown and I was sure Point Given could do it. I hit the Exacta in the Preakness and the Tri in the Belmont b/c I never gave up on Point Given. In my mind, this is the 2nd best Belmont performance behind Secratariat's.

well Monarchos did run the 2nd fastest derby of all time.  Congaree set the pace and ran his heart out to be 3rd.

the only reason he lost the derby was because he was up too close to that BLISTERING pace...every horse that was up front in the early fractions was COOKED at the top of the stretch. stevens even said he had no idea the pace was so fast, or else he would have kept him back further.

There should have been no reason why this horse shouldn't have won the Triple Crown.
