You can't realize spirituality through thought. It must be felt to be realized. Spirituality cannot be conceptualized to be realized. Only felt.

He's correct. simply noticing your breathing raises awareness. Because you are being AWARE of your breath. If you think you are breathing then that is thought. Thought is not awareness. And awareness itself has no form. That is spirituality. Otherwise you are stuck in thought. And the thought can't be in your control because you have no awareness. Simply having incessant thoughts running through your head all the time. Sometimes ones that you can't even see. Thought is using you.

He's so wrong. Being aware of your breath is being aware of your breath, not your awareness. There's something to be said for being in the moment, and maybe this guy is instrumental in helping people get there, but I just don't trust anybody who is treated as a new age Messiah. It's not good to be too dependent on the way another person thinks. Once we stop challenging each other and just accept that some of us have the final word, we subject ourselves to unquestioning subservience.
