IMAGINATIVE lecturers at Buckinghamshire New University have found a great way to make people really pay attention to a dull fire safety warning -- set it to music, and then sing it, in a style straight out of a 1960s Las Vegas night club.
Donning dark suits and sunglasses, and with the famous 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign flashing behind them, the University's Co-ordinators of Learning & Teaching (CoLTs -- a.k.a. cool close harmony trio, 'The CoLTs!'), deliver these well-known -- and commonly ignored -- warnings in a uniquely memorable way.
Stepping out of their normal roles, the performers are design theory lecturer, Dr Ray Batchelor, Dr Maurice Gledhill, and Dr Roger Dalrymple, department manager for education.
The 1min 43sec-long video 'In the Event of Fire' was created for delegates at the University's Feedback Matters! conference, their third annual Learning and Teaching event.
Dr Batchelor said: "The serious point -- apart from not wanting our conference delegates to burn to death, of course -- is a learning & teaching one: no matter how unpromising your material might seem at first sight, if the message is important, with imagination, it can be communicated effectively -- and effective communication is what we are all about.
"And it was great fun! If students produce their best work when they are enjoying themselves, then so do we."
Created for the Group for Innovations in Learning & Teaching (GILT Trip Productions), it was shot by Justin Luker from the Flexible & Distributed Learning Centre, introduced by journalism lecturer Mike Rowbottom, with special effects by Dan Cayzer and Anthony Chapman from Media Services.
Yay, I've always been a big Ray Bachelor fan. This is both entertaining and informative.

Gentlemen, that was marvellous. And 'Portable Air Horns' forms such a marvellously resonant refrain - who knew? Can't wait for your lounge-lovers take on the Mission Statement.
