Using a small tripod, a Canon 550D, Tamron 18-270 and cropped video in manual exposure mode.

This represents a 15 times magnification from the lens and 7 times from the cropped function so an overal magnificxation of over 100 times.

  • This may sound noob, how long do you rec. for the entire video. Overheat? Does 550d handle heat very well. Thanks.

  • @Apy83 I have only done 30 to 60 second videos but have never experienced any heating of the camera

  • Awsome!

I took a couple of pics of the moon recently with my new 500D but never thought of trying a vid. I'll need to give it a shot now. Thanks for the inspiration. :O)

  • @fishypaw Thanks. I look forward to seeing it. It's harder than it seems, a very bright dot in the black sky etc.

  • @johnsoncp13 I have studied photgraphy properly at college and I knew when I was taking the shots of the moon that I would need to stop the lens down to correct for over exposure of the moon, BUT I had to stop down a lot further than I was expecting, so I know what you mean. :O)

I am impressed with your vid. Do you remember what exposure settings you used?

  • @fishypaw I used Live View and just rotated the thumbwheel until the brightness seemed OK so I don't know the exact settings. If anything the colour appears a bit warm so perhaps I needed to brighten the image or set the white balance manually as well. By the time I had set it up, the moon had drifted out of view. At this zoom it really does seem to move fast. Manual focus, stability off, manual aperture and shutter etc. - great fun!

  • @sacredgeometry I used to have a couple of galleries on yahoo but not now. I have some images on photobucket but it's just a few random ones, not a great collection. I probably should make a new account somewhere and upload a few of my better pics. I'll let you know if I do and thanks for the interrest. :O)

  • @fishypaw have you got a flickr out of interest? it would be nice to see some of your shots.

  • @sacredgeometry Good idea. It's a bit ironic, me thinking I know a bit about photography and you trumping me with something that I knew of but have never tried and hadn't even considered as an option, lol.

No harm in being reminded that there is always more to learn. Time to go purchase a neutral density filter. ;O)

  • @fishypaw or you could try a nd filter and not stop down as much
