the wonderful, ultramundane voice of Gundula Janowitz performing Richard Strauss's Vier Letze Lieder (1948).
Directed by Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra, in Berlin, 1973.

  • wait wait WAIT. This...She could never sing this at the age of 11 according to your facts (recorded in 1948? I don't think so). She was BORN in 1937, so she would've been 11 years old then... I'm just wondering when she actually sang this.

  • Yes, I've put 1948 because is the release date of the Vier Letze Lieder, but the recording is from 1973, Berlin, and I didn't made that explicit. I'll change it now, thanks!

  • This is a very impressive recording. Janowitz' whole musical approach is extremely intelligent. Not to mention the glory of the instrument, the warmth and the beautiful technique. The disarming simplicity of the opening phrases and then building to the soaring climactic phrases still ring even as the orchestra brings all into the quietude of the finale. An extraordinarily great work of art.

  • J'aime Gundula car elle a quelque chose de l'éternelle jeunesse dans la voix et la fragilité d'une jeune fille dans la puissance de sa voix. Elle reste unique.

  • This was the first recording of the four last songs I bought, I think I must have about 20 different CD's now and this is beautiful.

  • one of the few instances where the use of 'ultramundane' has been entirely justified. Magnificent

  • I will never forget how, recently,a young man working in the 'classical' section of a record shop asked me excitedly.."Have you heard Gundula Janowitz??".....I replied.."Consider yourself extremely lucky to have discovered one of the most precious treasures on earth."...'For the children will pluck them like stars from the Heavens, thus will the most divine art form in humankind be propogated for all eternity'.

  • Miraculoso! Hasta los ateos creen en un dios cuando oyen algo así.

  • the best! And also thanks to Karajan! She's wonderful!

  • oh my gosh! This is wonderful! I just heard Fleming(wonderful singing, but too slow) and Schwarzkopf(glorious, my fav so far, but recorded in 1960 and '66 respectively)

Stumbled on this... wonderful singing, in addition to a lovely violin solo, and sensitive pizzicati from the low strings

She has a Full voice like Norman, lovely sound like Fleming, but with Schwarzkopf's concept of the song as a lullaby, soothing, and calm, a fitting way to enter the final sleep.

Thank you so much for posting!

  • no hay palabras simplemente maravilloso...

  • sweeter dreams cannot be ! An angel singing !And the first violin:a dream too !

  • I love the way this woman sings. It is so amazing.

  • depuis que j ai découvert ces Lieder, ils m accompagnent régulièrement,la magistrale et sensible interprétation par Gundula Janowitz des textes sur la musique de R Strauss est un moment puissant ,il accompagnera mes funérailles...
