I've seen very helpful videos related to dyscalculia on youtube but they are very few and even fewer personal accounts. I thought i would 'add to the cause' and share my own experiences and obstacles. I hope this video helps you to understand the condition better either for yourself or someone you know.

Let me know if you think I should make more dyscalculia vids (like a 'vlog' or something).
Is there anything you would particularly like to ask me about or have me talk about?
Plus, sorry the sound quality is so poor guys.

If this video helped, this is the video that inspired my own:

  • I have been tested for both Dyslexia & Discalculia, & everything you have mentioned in both videos i suffer from. I do feel a bit of an idiot sometimes, as you mentioned working out money in a shop or bar quick enough, giving out change, mixing up numbers in your head or writing them down wrong i was only tested for both about two years ago i remember when i was a kid my parents would say i was lazy because i couldn't get time or amounts of money i get really bad headaches working out something

  • @mchcohr I'm really sorry that that happened to you when you were younger. I had bad experiences at school myself. My dad has dyslexia and only got diagnosed with dyscalculia a few years ago by accident when they noticed some signs on a form or test he did. He's head of radiology and has even been a university teacher.

Not saying that's for you but I hope you see you can still do pretty awsome stuff.

  • you sound like you're about to cry in this video...I'm truly sorry for your suffering if that's the case.

  • @metalmike83 I watched after you said this and I do look like a bit of a sad case!

No, I wasn't about to burst into floods of tears, I can attribute it to a sore throat and being worried I would forget something or sound uninteresting.

Thank you for watching though be it out of curiousity or something else.

  • robYn well done im 60 and only now realise through contributions like yours of what has plagued me over 55 years, (except for the analogue clock) 4 me you were spot on but I can never remember what number the month is or what 1500 hours means without using my fingers...trivia aside it isnt a trivial problem as it can close so many doors on your life as well as spoil love for cards...anyway Ive never lost at poker...cant understand it..

  • @wegs50I suppose when I am forced to play cards I do get strangely lucky. I suppose it's because having no idea of what I'm doing I'm giving off no 'signals'.

I like to think it's not all bad. For example when I support children in maths lessons (I work in a school) when I work it out I give them a fresh perspective or an easier breakdown of the problem because I can just explain the steps that I mentally took myself.

Sorry to blab & thank you for the comment.

  • thanks for the videos. I was wondering if I had some sort of disability while trying to do my chem homework, and stumbled upon dyscalculia when I gave up on it lol. The symptoms described are so close to what I've experienced that I figure I may have it. I'm going to go get tested for it as soon as possible. Watching your video made me feel so much better; for once I didn't feel like I was stupid or inept. I may actually have an issue here. Thank you so much.

  • Hi RobYn, I was diagnosed with dyscalculia quite recently and have most of the problems you describe. Thanks for making this videos.

  • @nosuchthingasauserna Yeah, I don't think it was ever something I had to do either now that you say it. It used to happen a lot more when I was little, I remember counting all the time not even knowing when I started, losing my place and starting all over again. It was so distracting sometimes I couldn't pay attention to anything else, I wouldn't say I felt like I had to do it, just that it happened automatically, without any intention.

  • @purity4all I don't know... It isn't something I absolutely have to do. I do it when I'm completely bored out of my mind. Kind of like looking at clouds and seeing if you can find an elephant.

  • @nosuchthingasauserna me too, I wonderif theris an OCD connection?

  • Are you dyslexic as well as dyscalculic? When I was young I was told I was dyslexic, I don't think they had named dyscalcuia yet. They just told me it affected my math skills worse than my reading skills. I had trouble with both. I don't think they even realized it affected my perception on time and depth, and my sense of direction. I get lost all the time. I can get lost going to places I've driven to successfully time and time again.I don't know why some days are so much better than others.

  • @AmaindeJH haha, i do the same thing with the analog clock. when people ask me the time. I look at the clock and i pretend im trying to look at it, and i just tell them i cant see it or something so that they dont see how long it takes me to tell the time.

  • wow ammm i think i got some problems ur having but can deal with themm

    but is still hard to

  • Hey....do you think other people ever los track of numbers while counting? It happends to me mostly when I'm not concentrating, or tired, or hungry. Also, is it common not to be able to tell time accurately and consistently on a clock face? I have problems with it. I usually try to hide it, or pretent the clock is facing the wrong way.
