Although I spend lots of time creating multitracks for Youtube, I actually spend quite a bit of time performing with all sorts of groups. This is my funk/soul band "Keepers of the Groove" that formed when I was in my senior year at high school (2007). The majority of us are currently studying music, and when we're all back in Saskatoon, we usually put a couple fun shows together just for kicks and giggles.

This is a tune by the AWESOME group from the 60's (I think) called the Sugarman 3 (similar to Booker T). Anyways, we cover a couple songs of theirs and this is one of our favourites, called "Soul Donkey".

Trombone - Shamus Currie
Guitar - Richard Haubrich
Keys - Andrew Kesler (me)
Bass - Soren Nissen
Drums - Kyle Krysa
Percussion - Special guest Farhad!

Video taken with my Canon SD780, and edited in Final Cut Pro. Audio taken from the board and mixed (very hastily) in Logic Pro.

  • I love this song! Sugarman 3 were formed in the 90s by a guy called Neal Sugarman who plays in the Dap-Kings, one of the best soul/funk bands around! They played the backing for Amy Winehouse's album Back in Black and they also form the backing group for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. I saw them play in the Roundhouse at Camden last night and they were amazing :D

    Sounds great btw !!

  • Hey, Andrew! Please tell me, how do you record all your shows? it sounds really great, and i want to record in high quality too!

oh, and by the way, try searching "Watching YOU! #3" and look in one of the highest rated comment. ^^

  • @306ness You went to school with Andrew? lucky guy...

  • strangeness.. heard this today on hot buttered soul, recognized the sample from a de la soul track i believe... i hurry home to youtube it and find the only video for it is a cover provided by a guy i went to school with for 12 years. small world.

besides that. this cover is hot butter on cornbread, but yall already knew that.

  • Shamus hasn't breath at 37 second ?

  • Now that's some real groove :P

  • That's a cool groove man.

  • I love the tags you put...

Its always interesting seeing a brass player taking a leading role in a jazz combo... I always seem to find the trumpet/trombone/sax has background in these kind of small jazz thingys

  • I kind of think of Chicago.
