Three songs from Vaughan Williams' song cycle 'On Wenlock Edge':

On Wenlock Edge
Is My Team Ploughing?
Bredon Hill

Peter Pears (tenor)
Benjamin Britten (piano)
Zorian String Quartet

A. E. Housman's collection of bittersweet poems 'A Shropshire Lad' (1896) inspired many English song composers including George Butterworth, John Ireland and Vaughan Williams. Vaughan Williams composed 'On Wenlock Edge' in 1909 shortly after completing studies with Ravel whose influence is obvious, expecially in 'Bredon Hill'.

Peter Pears recorded the cycle with Benjamin Britten and the Zorian Quartet in 1946.
