It was at Arsenal that Henry made his name as a world-class footballer. Despite initially struggling in the Premier League, he emerged as Arsenal's top goal-scorer for almost every season of his tenure there. Under long-time mentor and coach Arsène Wenger, Henry became a prolific striker and Arsenal's all-time leading scorer with 226 goals in all competitions. The Frenchman won two league titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners; he was twice nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year, was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year twice, and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year three times. Henry spent his final two seasons with Arsenal as club captain, leading them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2006. In June 2007, after eight years with Arsenal, he transferred to Barcelona for a fee of €24 million. His first honours with the Catalan club came in 2009 when they won the league, cup and Champions League treble. Later he would go on to achieve an unprecedented sextuple by also winning the Spanish Supercup, the UEFA Supercup and the Club World Cup. Henry has been named in the UEFA Team of the Year five times.

Nas suas duas últimas temporadas pelo Arsenal, Henry foi o capitão do time e levou-o à final da Liga dos Campeões da UEFA de 2005-06. No entanto, em Junho de 2007, depois de oito anos vestindo a camisa do Arsenal, o passe de Henry foi vendido ao Barcelona por £16,1 milhões.

Com a seleção francesa, Henry venceu a Copa do Mundo FIFA de 1998, a Euro 2000 e a Copa das Confederações de 2003. Devido aos seus títulos, hoje Henry é tido como um dos melhores jogadores do mundo.

Star du football en Angleterre, il a marqué l'histoire d'Arsenal en devenant le buteur le plus prolifique du club. Vainqueur de la Coupe du monde en 1998 et du Championnat d'Europe des Nations en 2000, il détient depuis 2007 le record du nombre de buts inscrits en sélection nationale jusqu'alors détenu par l'ancien international Michel Platini (41 buts). Depuis décembre 2009, il est également le meilleur buteur français de l'histoire toutes compétitions confondues.

Henry, dessen Vater aus Guadeloupe und die Mutter aus Martinique stammt, wurde bereits seit seiner Kindheit auf eine Karriere als Fußballprofi vorbereitet. Er spielte zunächst bei einem Verein in der Pariser Vorstadt Les Ulis, dann von 1990 bis 1992 im nationalen französischen Trainingszentrum INF Clairefontaine und bis 1993 beim FC Versailles. Ab 1993 stürmte er für die AS Monaco, die ihn schon 1990 vorverpflichtet hatte. Dort gab er 1994 sein Debüt in der ersten französischen Liga. Im Januar 1999 wechselte Henry zu Juventus Turin, wo er allerdings nicht zurechtkam und zeitweise sogar als Außenverteidiger spielen musste.

15歳頃に、フランスサッカー学院（INF／クレールフォンテーヌ）で英才教育を受け、フランスU-15にも選出される。本人が語るところによると、INF卒業後にベルサ­イユのクラブに1シーズンだけ在籍しており、22試合に出場し76得点を記録しているとのこと。この時にASモナコのスカウトが視察した試合で7得点を決め、16歳の時に­父アントワーヌが仮契約書にサインしモナコに入団。
