Officially, the flu. But really it was AIDS. There's all sorts of stuff out there, but as best we can tell, her husband gave it to her, and then, as AIDS was for a time a shameful thing to admit to having, the husband was unwilling to let her get treated. She died in 2000, and in late 2001, her husband died from heroin abuse. Presummably he himself got AIDS from drugs, as he'd been using for years.
