Such crap is only possible thanx to the second Vatican Council. After this council many people did not feel at home in the Catholic Church anymore, and G 17 abused this feeling.

The biggest flaw in his logic was that he claimed to have been crowned Pope while maintaining the See of Palmar de Troya...the Pope is the Bishop of ROME and always will be...the See of Peter cannot be taken away from Rome!
The smart thing for Clemente to do would have been claim he was the actual Bishop of Rome...

Yes he claimed he did, even went further claiming a beautification vision. Also claimed he drank milk from the breast of the Virgin Mary. (although it was through a thin veil, so he didn't actually touch her with his lips) According to Clemente anyway.
