This carol is such a cheerful one, but it hides a sad truth. You may be familiar with Charles Dickens' writing stories of economic realities, but by this carol tells the story of children going door-to-door, poor neighbors hoping for the largess of wealthy neighbors to eat and to share a little Christmas cheer. It isn't so far from true today either. Two-thirds of the homeless and inadequately housed are women and children. Don't forget to give to someone in need this year.

  • "tells the story of children going door-to-door"

Actually, not really. This comes from the Anglo-Saxon tradition of heating up some mead and going from door-to-door, wishing people health on Yuletide and exchanging gifts. Hence the word 'wassail,' which comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Wacht heil" or, "good health to you." It was then later used for the purpose you outline (hence the added lyrics about cash), but that is not the real source. Anyway, I hope you have a merry Christmas, and Wacht heil!
