Driving through Texas with Willie Nelson
I've got no boots, I've got no Stetson
Just me and Willie in a rental car
On a four hour drive, we haven't gone too far

Driving 290 on our way to Austin
Me, I'm no cowboy, born and raised in Boston
Down here on another boring business trip
Taking orders from my boss and biting my lip

But when Willie sings he takes me away to some other place
Riding high on the range with a hot Texas wind blowing in my face
When Willie sings we're Pancho and Lefty and we're riding free
And it makes me wonder how Texas used to be

Willie says to look for a roadside cantina
He'd like to get a drink with a sweet senorita
But there's nothing but cows and pickup trucks
I say "Hey Willie, man, you're out of luck"

Driving through a town off the interstate
Starbucks, McDonalds, Motel Super 8
Where the hell did all the honky tonks go?
Replaced by a Walmart and a Home Depot

But when Willie sings he takes me away to some other place
Riding high on the range with a hot Texas wind blowing in my face
When Willie sings we're Pancho and Lefty and we're riding free
And it makes me wonder how Texas used to be

Willie tells the story of how Pancho died
And how Lefty betrayed him and then withdrew inside
I guess cowboys and outlaws never fade away
They still haunt the trails around this dusty highway

Just outside of Austin and it's getting late
As darkness descends over the Lone Star State
I'm in my hotel room trying to catch up on work
And Willie's onstage somewhere in Gatlinburg

And when Willie sings he takes me away to some other place
Riding high on the range with a hot Texas wind blowing in my face
When Willie sings we're Pancho and Lefty and we're riding free
And it makes me wonder how Texas used to be
