Richmond Food Deserts

Food deserts are considered areas of inner cities where cheap nutritious food is virtually unobtainable.

In Richmond, VA, and nationwide, urban area residents often lack physical and financial access to the nutritious food that many take for granted.

According to census information, Richmond has three times more people living per square mile than Henrico Country does.

But a quick look at this map (bit.ly/batmYE) shows Henrico County has almost three times more grocery stores than Richmond. A majority of the ones in the city are clustered near one another, perched at the top of Carytown.

In Churchill, corner store shopping is a way of life. Without personal transportation, the closest grocery store is far away. Many residents have no choice but to pay higher prices for corner store convenience shopping. The selections are also scant, and offer little produce.

Many lower income neighborhood residents depend upon food stamps. The noticeable price difference between retailers affects a family's budget, as does the lack of available healthy food at cornerstores.
