In October of 2008, my friends and I entered into an annual film competition at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN.
On Thursday around 5:00pm, we were given the poetry: Summer grasses; the afterward of strong men's dreams. We spent the next 24 hours brainstorming and planning for the weekend.
On Friday night at 5:00pm, we were given equipment and the go-ahead to start shooting.
By 10:00pm Saturday night, the movie was being rendered and exported.
It was shown Sunday night to a student body of more than 100 attendees where it was voted Festival Favorite. It then went on to be entered into the national competition through the BEA. In Las Vegas in the spring of 2009, at the annual NAB/BEA convention, we went forward to claim our reward for taking first place in the short-film category for 2-year/small college division.
A film is a truly wonderful tool for conveying a story. To have made this in a weekend is simply magic.
Special thanks to the event organizers. I hope this is able to continue for many years.
Thanks also to Jeff for amazing camera work and quick editing skills; to Juliana for keeping us on time with the project; and to my good friend Vince, the sound designer who had never used a Mac before. Simply amazing team.
