Artist Statement

I have designed geometric and abstract patterns which are inspired from the lines of Korean alphabet, 'Han-geul'. Because of Han-geul's geometric and modern patterns with vertical lines, horizontal lines, squares, triangles, and circles, it has strong potential as a design instrument. Individually written, the letters are as follows:
ㄱ,ㄴ,ㄷ,ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅇ,ㅈ,ㅊ,ㅋ,ㅍ,ㅌ,ㅎ(14 consonants),
ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ,ㅗ,ㅛ,ㅜ,ㅠ,ㅡ,ㅣ(10 vowels).

Also, I concern myself with works in the specific 'Space' depicting emotions inspired from its surroundings and atmosphere. One starry night, when I sat on the bench next to Triton Pools at Cranbrook Academy of Art, stars were reflected on water. At that time, I hit upon this music, "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star". I wished I could regain the innocence of my childhood. So, I create geometric patterns using Korean alphabet, Han-geul. Through this project, I apply and extend the geometric patterns to landscape installation with natural phenomena like wave of water, reflected illusion on its surface, wind and sunlight. This installation work is about my childhood memories embodied by a series of fabric patchworks.

Mondrian's Neo-plasticism(1917-1944), which comprises grids of vertical and horizontal black lines and the use of the three primary colors, has influenced my artwork. Whenever I create my abstract and geometric designs with Han-geul, I am deeply inspired by his composition has perfect and refined component proportion. My works have become installations into space. I always think about the connection between my works and architecture because my pattern designs closely resembles architecture; thus, they are most optimally represented in an architectural space.
