President Jakaya Kikwete has led Tanzanians to mark the golden jubilee of fifty years of independence at Uhuru stadium in Dar es salaam where at national level the celebrations were held with fanfare and gallantry.
The president who is commander--in--chief of the armed forces entered the stadium aboard an open military jeep accompanied by Chief of Defense Forces general Davis Mwamunyange and went around the stadium waving hands to greet the people.
Later he went to a dais to receive a twenty--one gun salute as the national anthem was played before inspecting a guard of honor mounted by members of the armed forces.
The parade was followed by dramatic display of the army's equipment ranging from tanks, artillery, armored personnel carriers, trucks and other military vehicles used in warfare which were followed by jetfighters hovering over the sky around the historic stadium to pay their respect.
There was also mass performance by some 4,500 children of primary and secondary schools from Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar who decorated the stadium with breathtaking recitals in a variety of appearances before a performance by cultural troupe dances from Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.
