The R2D2 Builder's Club brings one of the world's most beloved fictional robots to life. Steve Simmons and his hobby roboticist club use fabrication, programming, and remote controls to build exact replicas of R2D2. Their R2's are quirky friends who roamed Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 delighting everyone they encountered.

  • A basic scratch built astromech with basic functions such as mobilty, dome rotation, low budget sound and lights can start around $400, and can exceed $10k+ for an all aluminum droid. The more you scratch-built the less $ you spend.

  • Great video. I hope to some day build my own R2D2, other then our generation one model I helped with in my high school electronics class in 1981. Can I ask what was the total cost of building his droid?
