Rakesh Prasana demonstrating the notes of a bansuri flute. Most flutes/recorders /whistles I know of give you the tonic or Doh/Sa when you cover all the holes. On the bansuri flute this gives you the 5th degree of the scale or Soh/Pa. Interestingly when no holes are covered the note is a sharpened fourth or Ma#. You may find this video useful if you have a bansuri flute and no teacher. Rakeshji makes his own flutes. Simple but most beautiful instruments, that are quite challenging to play well. He also plays an end blown open- holed flute, which I had not seen before.
