I understand the invasion from the imperial view of Moscow. I do not understand ordinary Russians defending it. It was done to keep everybody else in line, as Czechoslovak departure from socialist block would be bad for discipline. What did it gain you personally? You traded a friendly and grateful country (now two countries in fact) - for a discipline measure that was temporary as in the end it was Moscow who ultimately called the quits on the socialism.

@jlabath
It was cold war. USA made many bad things too. Like brought to power Pinochet and invasion in Grenada and many others. When two empires fights each others - the entire world suffers. There is nothing to proud, but it was such time.

So Warsaw Pact invaded Czechoslovakia to help? The good old Soviets, Hungarians, Polish, East Germans, Bulgarians all invaded out of concern for the well being of Czechs and Slovaks?

They were invited by the government. There were riots, problems on the West German border, spies were caught sneaking in, threats made. Propaganda entering at alarming rates. Dubcek would not act, he panicked. Look, my father was in the military then, my family was there. Stop repeating the anti socialist lies.

jlabath,

SEFARAD2K4 is an armchair Marxist from the U.S., and more than likely has never lived a day in his or her life near Prague or what was once Czechoslovakia. If SEFARAD2K4 said the same thing at Wenceslas Square in front of the memorials to Palach and Zajíc, I don't think the comments would be welcome at all, and they aren't here either judging by the number of negative responses already. Another one of those "roll your eyes" people.

Greetings from Bavaria.

Treason? Yes these idiots that asked for a "comrades help". Not Dubcek, mr. know-it-all, he was intervened by soviet paratroopers in first hour of invasion.
Western sabotage? Don't make me laugh and stop seeing conspiracy behind every corner.

Parliament asked for help. Yes, Western sabotage, the hoards and propaganda coming in from West Germany. My father was in the military at the time and remembers the American-West German provocations on the border. The people they caught sneaking in, etc.
