The Ghan has to be THE iconic rail journey of Australia - its our Orient Express. Anyone who has travelled on it will be able to tell you the outback is well and truly alive, and very beautiful. It might not be the fastest train on earth, but its a cruise after all.

"Name" trains like the Indian Pacific and The Ghan are like mobile hotel/resorts. The objective is the journey, not the speed.

I thought only trains in North America had bells on the locomotives.

Also, i followed the complete track on google maps yesterday from Port Augusta to Alice and there are even a few switchpoints to several mines and other stuff.

@theyourmumifyer i bet they do. If you look on google maps at the railway at Alice Springs you can see a few freight cars on the same rails. maps.google.nl/?ll=-23.696382,

Do freight trains run this line?
