Street Children in Sao Paulo, Brazil- Pixote (part 12 of 13)

This is certainly the finest film ever made about street children and a great film by any criteria. Directed by Hector Babenco and starring Fernando Ramos da Silva, this film is the acknowledged inspiration that led Gregory Smith to Sao Paulo to found his innovative and splendidly successful Hummingbird program for street children. And it has inspired many others to work on behalf of street children, including myself.

The 4:10 scene could never have been filmed in the USA. I don't remember what the MPAA rating was on the VHS box, but if the MPAA gave it an R rating, they must have fallen asleep at this point. They would've given the movie an X rating based on it.

Babenco has said that it was easier to make this movie under a Fascist dictatorship than under American democracy.

I think part 13 keeps getting removed. Or not available in the US. I remember watching this film on PBS back in the late 80s and early 90s. The final scene is very explicit because it involves Pixote and the prostitude. On a side note...Criterion Collection should add Pixote to their list of most wanted. It's long overdue.
