Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) wrote his Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) by selecting five Rückert poems of which "Nun will die Sonn' so hell aufgeh'n" -- Now the sun will rise as brightly is the first song.Mahler conducted the premier, sung by Friedrich Weidemann, in Vienna on 29 January 1905. Mahler wrote to Guido Adler in 1908 "I placed myself in the situation that a child of mine had died. When I really lost my daughter, I could not have written these songs any more."

Here Kirsten Flagstad (soprano) is accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
conductor Sir Adrian Boult
