On July 10th, 2005, Category 3 Hurricane Dennis slammed into Apalachicola, ripping apart our city piers, and in doing so, tearing a serious hole in the fabric of our community. After all, what is a fishing town like ours without it's fishing pier? Three years is a long time to wait, but the big news is, it's BACK, it's BEAUTIFUL, and it's BETTER than ever! Key West can have it's Mallory Docks; here in Apalachicola, we've got the Lafayette Park 1000 foot Pier. At this hometown tradition, Sunset is quality family time, and quality family time is also community time: for fishing, for wildlife watching, for cast-netting, and for just plain catching up with the latest goings on. Speaking of catching up, I've got a lot of lost fishing time to make up for-----gotta go; see you down at the pier! Watch this video slideshow and see what we've been missing! And Don't forget to select "Watch in High Quality" if you have the bandwidth.
Oh my! Yes! I am so happy! My family and I were so upset that it was destroyed by Hurricane Dennis. See every year, we come to St. George Island, we would always go to this pier and take pictures, and there is sort of like a timeline of pictures of my brother and I, and it shows us getting older in each picture. But we weren't able to do that, the last few years we came, because the pier wasn't there in a way. So thank you for sharing this! My family will be so happy to hear about this!
