Indian Student Stabbed in Australia

An Indian student remains in intensive care after being stabbed at a party in Melbourne, Australia. Police deny that escalating attacks against Indian students are racially motivated.

A 17-year-old Australian male has been charged with attempted murder of an Indian student, Sravan Kumar Theerthala.

Theerthala remains in intensive care, after being attacked with a screwdriver when a group of youths "gatecrashed" a Melbourne suburban party early Sunday morning.

[Sujatha Singh, Indian High Commissioner to Australia]:
"Such attacks should not be allowed to happen. It is the responsibility of the Australian Government, of the Australian authorities to ensure the well-being and security of our students studying in Australia."

Two other Indian students were assaulted in separate incidents earlier this month.

Singh believes that at least some of the attacks were driven by racism.

This view was disputed by Victorian Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe.

[Kieran Walshe, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner]:
"We don't think it's actually racially motivated we just think that they're seen as a soft target."

A hotline dedicated to Indian student victims began in Australia earlier this month.
